Born in Oxford, England, while at school Sylvia received a scholarship to Art school. After Art school she trained as a nurse in England but always kept up her love for painting and drawing.

In 1966 she moved to Ireland with her Irish husband and their children. She continued to paint and draw when time allowed. In 1988 with her family reared she had the opportunity to follow her passion for art and entered Sligo Regional Technical College (now known as Sligo Institute of Technology) as a mature student. She was involved in print, ceramics, paint, photography, sculpture, drawing and art history. Sylvia graduated in 1992 with a diploma in fine art.

Sylvia has lived in the northwest coastal area since 1986, her inspiration comes from there and her love of nature and the countryside.
