Marie O’Gara mixed media artist, is originally from Clonmel, Co Tipperary. After finishing school she studied fine art in the Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork.
Marie later pursued a career in nursing and moved to the North West with her family who wanted to return. Here she subsequently raised her own family.
She rediscovered her love of art while doing a PLC Course in Sligo, and from here went on to study abstract art under internationalist artists Nick Wilton and Joan Fullerton.
Marie’s roots and ancestry, which run between west Donegal and south Sligo inspire her work. She feels a deep connection living, as the crow flies, right between these two ancestral locations.
She loves to use very old documents, newspapers or letters as collage in her work, and along with paint and other media, builds layer upon layer seeking to create a sense of depth and history which at times can be revealed through the paint.
She is also very much inspired by the beautiful landscape around her coastal home in north Sligo.
Most of Marie’s work is acrylic on board using the System 3 and Winsor & Newton ranges
