Kitronik 3V Vertical Submersible Water Pump

    Manufacturer: Kitronik
This 3V vertical submersible low power water pump is an ideal solution for creating a small indoor water feature or as part of a plant watering system. At the heart of the pump is a 3V DC motor that runs quietly and only draws approximately 100mA.

The pump needs priming before use and should be kept fully submerged during use as it will only pump water not air. Also, it only works in one direction as a pump, you cannot reverse the connections and have it move water in the other direction.

It's 3V, 100mA power requirements are such that you could use a microcontroller with suitable drive capacity to switch it on or off. As the new micro:bit now has 200mA available for powering external devices, this pump can be powered directly by the micro:bit V2.

The micro:bit can only drive 15mA from its pins, so a transistor or FET is required to control it from the pins, either in an on/off capacity, or, with PWM to vary pumping rate. If using the original micro:bit or if the microbit is already controlling other devices, this pump can also be powered and controlled via a motor driver board, or similar.

Note: This pump is not supplied with any tubing.

  • Vertical type submersible pump.

Picture of Kitronik Prong Soil Moisture Sensor for micro:bit

Kitronik Prong Soil Moisture Sensor for micro:bit

    KI 5647
The Prong soil moisture sensor for BBC microbit is a sensor board that can be directly mounted to a BBC micro:bit to monitor the moisture present in the soil. The two conductive tines are placed into the soil. Any water or moisture in the soil will conduct to give an analogue voltage that can be read by the BBC micro:bit.

Prong is powered from the 3V supply of the BBC micro:bit. Use either the USB or JST connector on the BBC micro:bit to power the circuit. Prong and the BBC micro:bit can also be powered from the Mi:Power board to create a compact stand-alone unit.

The board has been designed so that the BBC micro:bit can be bolted on using 3 x M3 nuts and 3 x M3 screws. Place the screws through the P1, 3V and GND holes of the PCB and BBC micro:bit, then use the M3 nuts to fasten together on the back of BBC micro:bit. Alternatively, croc-clips can be used to connect between the Prong and the BBC micro:bit.

If using the Mi:Power board then additionally connecting P0 means the BBC micro:bit can sound an alarm if the soil becomes too dry. When fitted to the Prong moisture sensor, the micro:bit can be coded via any of the micro:bit editors, such as the Microsoft MakeCode editor.

Note: To ensure that the Prong moisture sensor has a long and fulfilling life, it is better to write your code to perform a moisture check every so often rather than continuously. When the check is performed continuously it promotes rapid erosion of the electrodes.

    Features:
  • Measure soil moisture levels.
  • Attaches directly to the microbit.
  • Use in conjunction with the Mi:Power board to provide power and an audible alarm.
  • Code with any microbit coding editor.

  • Contents:
  • 1 x Prong Soil Moisture Sensor for microbit.
  • 3 x M3 Hex Nuts.
  • 3 x M3 Countersunk Screws.

  • Dimensions:
  • Length: 68mm.
  • Height: 53mm.
  • PCB Thickness: 1.6mm.

Kitronik Pre-Built Edge Connector Breakout Board for the BBC micro:bit

    KI 5601B
Looking to do more with your BBC micro:bit? Unlock its potential with this ‘pre-built’ version of the Edge Connector Breakout Board! This breakout board has been designed to offer an easy way to connect additional circuits and hardware to the pins on the edge of the BBC micro:bit. It provides access to all of the BBC micro:bit processor pins allowing a lot of extra functionality to be added. The datasheet (below) includes a helpful diagram explaining the function of every pin on the BBC micro:bit.

This Edge Connector Breakout Board for the BBC micro:bit gives access to all of the important pins on the bottom edge of the BBC micro:bit. 21 pins are broken out in total; providing additional I/O lines, direct access to buttons A and B, the LED matrix outputs and the I2C bus. Please refer to the datasheet below for more details.

The BBC micro:bit pins are broken out to a row of pin headers. These provide an easy way of connecting circuits using jumper wires. The SCL and SDA pins are separated at the edge of the board (solder pads) providing easy identification. The PCB includes a prototyping area with 3V, 0V and unconnected rows that can be soldered to. This allows the easy connection of switches, sensors and any pull-up or pull-down resistors etc. as required.

To use the breakout board the BBC micro:bit should be inserted firmly into the connector.

    Features:
  • Features a dedicated pin strip for quick and easy prototyping.
  • Breaks out 21 pins from the edge of the BBC micro:bit.
  • Dedicated prototyping area with 3V and 0V rows.
  • Labelled pins and clear straightforward documentation.

  • Contents:
  • 1 x Edge Connector Breakout Board for the BBC micro:bit, Pre-built.

  • Possible applications include:
  • Accessing additional pins and functionality on the BBC micro:bit.
  • Trying out one of the experiments detailed in the Inventors kit for BBC micro:bit.

  • Dimensions:
  • Length: 60mm.

Picture of Kitronik Clippable Detector Board

    Kitronik Clippable Detector Board

    KI 5678
The Clippable Detector board for the BBC micro:bit detects light, objects and can follow lines. The board is compatible directly with the BBC micro:bit and certain Kitronik boards, such as the Klip Motor Board.

The board works by using phototransistors to detect the reflectiveness of different surfaces. The Clippable Detector board has 3 phototransistor sensors evenly spaced out from each other. The sensors provide an analogue voltage to the BBC microbit. Five connections are required for full operation. These connections match those on a BBC micro:bit and can be attached using either bolts or croc-clip leads.

Kitronik have produced a set of custom MakeCode blocks for the Clippable Detector board. To add them to the editor, select the cog icon in the top right of the editor. Then, select Extensions from the drop down menu and in the search bar type and enter Kitronik. Pick the tile from the list and the new blocks will be added to the menu in the editor. It is also possible to use MicroPython to write code for this board.

    Features:
  • Use the board to detect light, objects or to follow lines.
  • The board is fitted with 3 phototransistors that detect the reflectiveness of different surfaces.
  • Connect the board directly to the micro:bit or connect using croc-clip leads.
  • Kitronik created custom MakeCode blocks to make the job of coding as easy as possible.
