Level B1 is appropriate for most problem readers. They guess at words. They have trouble reading words such as what, that, a, and the when the words appear in a sentence context. They often read synonyms or printed words and are generally inconsistent in their reading behavior (reading a word correctly one time and missing it the next time)

Level B2 is appropriate for students who have some decoding problems, who do not read at an adequate rate, who still tend to confuse words with similar spellings, and who tend to make word-guessing mistakes.

Level C is appropriate for students who have mastered many basic reading skills but who have trouble with multisyllabic words and typical textbook material.

The name Toe by Toe was chosen to signify that a student makes progress by the tiniest steps – one toe at a time. However, even though the steps taken are small, the student can clearly measure his or her progress right from the first page. The student’s confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result.

Over 25 years of fieldwork went into the development of the system and it is this research which makes the method so easy to use. You don’t have to be trained in any field of Education to tutor with Toe by Toe. In fact, the manual often works better with non-professionals using it as they do not come to the task with any pre-conceived notions and thus simply follow the very detailed instructions to the letter.

The unique syllable division employed by Toe by Toe is very easy to use though it is not the syllable division generally used for the teaching of reading. Once the sound of a phoneme has been taught using the ‘polynons’ (nonsense words), these rules can then be applied to any multi-syllabic word and students find a whole new world of reading opening before their eyes.

No matter what the nature of the student’s literacy problem, they can be taught to read using Toe by Toe. The severity of their problem may only be reflected in the length of time needed to get through the book. Indeed, if the system is used with a ‘non-dyslexic’ child (i.e. one without learning difficulties) the rapid improvement in reading age is truly astonishing.

Aimed at teachers, teaching assistants and one-to-one tutors who have the task of boosting the writing skills of lower-attaining students in Secondary Schools. It is about making fast and enjoyable progress. The new Ofsted inspection framework and the new standards for teachers require a renewed focus on literacy and differentiation, and those two things are exactly what Getting on with Writing is concerned with.

The new Ofsted framework is strongly focused on how teachers meet the needs of lower attaining and less advantaged students. Getting on with Writing provides engaging activities aimed at moving students from Level 2 up towards Level 5 in writing. The activities are a timely contribution to effective intervention programmes.

The activities can be used in lessons, in small groups, and can be easily adapted for one-to-one tuition sessions. The sessions are clearly explained and set out and are accompanied by ready-for-use resources. Each session ahs a clear learning focus and relevant success criteria in plain language. An invaluable support for new standards that require teachers to use 'approaches which are appropriate to pupils' needs in order to involve and motivate them'.
